Coming soon · not taking new households yet
Know what's in every box.
Item Chaos is a home inventory built around printed QR labels and your phone's camera. Stick a label on a box, photograph what goes in, and find any item later — in the garage, the attic or the storage unit. Each household gets its own copy, built to be self-hosted.
How it works
Three steps, and the label does most of the remembering.
- Available
Print labels
Print a sheet of numbered QR labels as a PDF and stick one on each box, bin or tote.
- Available
Photograph what goes in
Take a photo of an item with the box label in the shot. Item Chaos reads the label and files the item in that box.
- Available
Find it later
Search by name or description, or scan a box label with your phone to see everything inside.
What it does today
Every feature below is in the current build. The tag says where it stands: Available works end to end; In Beta works with a catch, described on the card.
-
QR box labels
AvailablePrint a numbered batch of QR labels, or a single label for one box, as a ready-to-print PDF.
Web and phone app
-
Boxes inside boxes
AvailablePut boxes in bigger boxes or on shelves and see the whole stack. In the web app, move a box by scanning its label and the label of its new home.
Web and phone app
-
Photos file themselves
AvailableWhen a photo shows a box label, the item goes into that box. Book ISBNs and product barcodes in the photo are saved with the item.
Web and phone app
-
Scan to see inside
AvailablePoint the phone at a box label to open that box and its list of items.
Phone app
-
Search everything
AvailableSearch items and boxes by name and description.
Web and phone app
-
Find the box on the shelf
AvailableLook for an item, then pan the camera across a shelf: the app marks the labels of boxes that hold it.
Phone app
-
Works with bad signal
AvailableBrowse what you looked at in the last 24 hours with no connection. Photos taken offline wait in a queue and upload when the signal comes back.
Phone app
-
Hand things on
AvailableGroup items going to someone else into a transfer and print the list as a PDF.
Web and phone app
-
Merge duplicates
AvailablePhotographed the same thing twice? Merge the items; photos move over, nothing is lost.
Web and phone app
-
Face ID lock
AvailableLock the phone app with Face ID or your phone’s other biometric unlock.

AI item suggestions
In BetaGet a suggested name, description, category and price from a photo, then keep or change it. The catch: it needs a vision model running on your own server.

Built to be self-hosted
A home inventory is a list of everything you own and where it is. Item Chaos is built so that list lives in a copy that belongs to your household — not in a shared cloud account, and not mixed with anyone else's.
-
A separate copy per household
AvailableEvery household gets its own copy of Item Chaos with its own database and photo storage. Nothing is shared between households, and there is no central account system.
-
Your phone talks to your server
AvailableThe phone app connects to the server address you give it, and sends your inventory there and nowhere else.
-
AI that stays at home
In BetaAI item suggestions use a vision model running on the same hardware as your copy of Item Chaos. Photos are not sent to a cloud AI service.
-
No tracking
AvailableNo analytics, advertising or tracking code in the web app or the phone app — and none on this website either.
-
Run it on your own computer
RoadmapAn install guide and package so you can host Item Chaos at home, on a computer you control. Today each copy is set up by hand.
